Platinum #33 - Portal 2

Platinum Difficulty Rating - 5/10
This trophy list is distinctly split into 2 area's, catering both to the Single Player and Co-operative modes the game has to offer.
In regards to the Single Player mode, the game follows a pretty large emphasis on progression based trophies, topped off with the "Lunacy" trophy, awarded for witnessing the end-game.

By this point, you'll have guaranteed 14 trophies, along with any of the Chapter specific trophies you may have also inadvertently unlocked too, though you'll actually have to go out of your way to unlock the rest of the trophies.

Aside the progression based trophies, everything else is awarded for performing specific in-game actions, and with very cryptic trophy descriptions to boot, you're most likely going to need to use guides in order to unlock the majority of them. It's easy to point out how simple alot of the trophies are by using visually aided guides, but it has to be said that some of the requirements for these trophies would also be incredibly difficult to work out on your own accord, and would ramp the overall Platinum difficulty towards to higher end of the scale if you were try and figure them out by yourself without the use of video walkthroughs.

As you'd expect, the puzzles start easy and gradually get tougher, and some of the test chambers, particularly into the latter areas in the game, will rack your brains and put you through your paces, but things will eventually click into place and you can realistically beat the Single Player game within 8-10 hours, though this is largely dependant on your thinking skills and ability to solve the puzzles.

As far as the Co-operative mode goes, this is definitely where the greater challenge of the trophy list stems from.

The trophies actually follow a very similar structure to the Single player mode, with a bunch of progression based trophies related to completing all levels within the 4 different Co-op courses in the game, culminting with the "You Saved Science" trophy, awarded for completing all test chambers in all courses of co-op.

There are 40 chambers in total, and as before, they start easy enough and progressively get tougher, but with the added benefit of a second brain, the solutions become alot easier to dissect and solve.

The other trophies are, again, just Chapter specific, but their descriptions are alot more clear cut than the Single player counterparts, with the requirements for the trophy concise enough to peform and fulfil. Some of them are incredibly easy, but some of them also take some solid teamwork and co-ordination to pull off.

The "Still Alive" trophy, awarded for completing course 4 with neither you nor your co-op partner dying, is the toughest trophy in the whole list, and your teamwork and co-operative skills need to impeccable to ensure both players survive to the end. The course contains 9 test chambers, and either of you dying at any point will require you to play from the very beginning of the course. There's alot of trial and error involved too, given the fact the course is full of hazards, so you'll most likely need to be prepared to replay the entire course multiple times before you nail it and remember it enough to get through successfully.

There are others that require some nifty teamwork, but they're nowhere near as difficult to pull off, though alot of that is down to the fact you're playing with another person and essentially have double the brain power.

The "Professor Portal" trophy, awarded for completing the Calibration Course online with a friend who hasn't played before, after completing the co-op mode yourself, isn't as tough as it initially sounded. You do have to make sure you've beaten the Co-operative side of the game in it's entirety first, and then it's just a matter of going through the tutorial mode online with a new player. Luckily, the work-around is an easier alternative, and if you've got access to a second controller, you can just make a new game and play in split-screen mode and you'll still be awarded the trophy.

In reality, it would be alot harder to find a genuinely new player simply for this trophy, especially when you consider they're more likely to dive straight into the own game before playing through the tutorial online with someone else, so the work-around solution is a God-send, given the potential headache this trophy could have caused.

The "Friends List with Benefits" trophy, awarded for hugging 3 different people on your friends list whilst playing Co-op, is only worth a mention because you need 3 other people with a copy of the game, but it's easy enough to recruit a small group of people if you're part of an online gaming community anyway, but you'll most likely struggle if you aren't, so it's strongly recommended.

All in all, this is a pretty relaxed Platinum trophy if you have a good knack for solving puzzles ad enjoy some hard thinking. Both the Single Player and Co-operative modes add their fair share of challenges at varying points, though they never really escalate to a point where you're left either baffled or resorting to visual guides for assistance, so the balance is well struck.

Some of the trophies, especially the cryptic Single Player ones are best sorted with guides because of their near impossible nature without them, but the ones that are more closed and have more concise instructions can give you a satisfying challenge, especially in the Co-operative side of the list.

Even still, you can beat the whole game within 20-25 hours, and although that does largely depend on how good you are at problem solving, it's still going to be a realistic time estimation for most players.
