Platinum #24 - Worms 2 : Armaggedon

Platinum Difficulty Rating - 8/10

Practically the entire list is emphasised around the games Multi-Player mode, with a collection of trophies that end up making this Platinum a pretty solid challenge.

The "Donkey Dodger" trophy, awarded for surviving the enemy deploying a Concrete Donkey in a ranked match, and still going on to win the round, is by far the hardest trophy in the whole list, and could easily take hours upon hours of time to achieve.

Not only is the Concrete Donkey incredibly rare to obtain, but you also need to make sure that it's your opponent who picks it up, and then actually survive it's mass destruction and still end up beating your opponent when all is said and done.

The only way to obtain the Concrete Donkey is through a weapons crate, and you'll never actually know whether your opponent has one available because of the fact enemy weapon pick-ups are always made anonymous, which also adds a huge element of guesswork to the trophy. Given how destructive it is, you'll most likely find out sooner, rather than later, if your opponent has one, and once it's triggered, it's just a matter of somehow winning the game, which is much easier said than done after surviving a Concrete Donkey attack. Trophies that rely on input from anyone else other than yourself will always be slightly tougher, but when your opponent actually becomes part of that equation too, it's even harder.

In a very similar mould, the "Armageddon Good at This" trophy, awarded for winning a ranked match by being the last worm standing after deploying Armageddon, also requires a massive slice of luck to achieve.

Not only is the Armageddon attack just as hard to get a hold of as the Concrete Donkey, you also need to have 1 surviving worm after unleashing it, which is a bit of a lottery and could easily end up working against you.The attack causes a hail of asteroids to destroy the map, and not much is left behind once it's concluded. It could very well end up wiping everything out and ending the game in a stalemate, or even just wiping out your remaining worms and granting the victory to your opponent, both of which happened to me and made things extremely frustrating.

You can make a case for this trophy being slightly easier than "Donkey Dodger", but only for the fact that there is less of an enemy influence here, since it is down to you to use the weapon, rather than your opponent, that gives you slightly more control over the outcome of the trophy.

It is important to note that seeking cover underground before unleashing the attack, through use of the blowtorch or pneumatic drill, will definitely yield the best results, and since you only need to have 1 worm left to unlock the trophy, it is alot easier to just keep a single worm safe and try and play out the remainder of the game if Armageddon doesn't wipe every other worm out first.

Both of those trophies could, hypothetically, take forever to get, due to their huge basis of luck. You can somewhat increase your chances of finding both weapons by playing crazy crates mode, where random crates are dropped at a much higher volume, but it won't make the relevant weapons any more common in terms of drop rate.

When you couple that with the fact that you still have to go and win the round, which potentially brings about more woes if you somehow end up on the losing side after fulfilling the harder part of the trophies requirements, it already makes for a solid list, and tips it straight into the higher difficulty scales.

The "Ranked Master" trophy, awarded for achieving 17 wins in each of the games modes; Standard, Pro, Crazy Crates and Forts, also deserves a nod, simply for the amount of quitters who will deny you valuable win progress towards the trophy, and make it hugely time consuming as a result. You only need 70 wins across the 4 game modes to fulfil the requirements of the trophy, and apart from a few struggles finding games for the less popular game modes, it isn't terribly difficult to achieve, but it's also a trophy that suffers from a lack of win registration for players who quit at any point during the game.

As you can imagine, this is a common issue when you're about to land a winning blow on a final worm, and after having an unofficial tally of 181 wins, courtesy of the outrageous amount of quitters, it was unnecessarily grindy, and an ultimately frustrating experience. Having to win over 100 more games than necessary to finally unlock the trophy was difficult for all the wrong reasons, and notched up the overall completion time significantly as a consequence.

Despite the heavy emphasis with the online trophies, the "Going Solo" trophy, awarded for completing the single player campaign, is difficult in parts, particularity towards the latter stages of the campaign, but there are only 22 levels to get through, and it doesn't cause you anywhere near the amount of difficulty any of the online trophies will. They're also relatively short and quick to blast through, with the only real time consuming parts coming from the latter stages where you might be expected to replay certain levels a handful of times.

There are also a few trickier silver trophies thrown in for good measure, including the "Wind Assisted" trophy, awarded for winning a ranked match using only Bazookas, which is much tougher than it might sound, giving how difficult it can be to judge the trajectory and angle of bazooka missiles. When you also consider the fact that your opponent will be using a full arsenal of weapons, and not restricting themselves to any one weapon, it's even harder and means you'll need to tactical in your approach.

The "In your own Time" trophy, awarded for winning a ranked match by being the last surviving worm after sudden death, will ensure you have to take the match into overtime, which could very well mean purposely running down the clock and denying your opponent time on the map to fire attacks away. It could very come naturally, especially with the amount of online ranked wins you'll need too, but it is very circumstantial, and once you're in the situation to win the game, it's just a matter of making sure the enemy worms die before your single worm does.

Overall, this is a list with a difficult list, with challenging elements to be found around every corner. The huge emphasis of luck will naturally contribute to this, and no matter how good at the game you might be, luck has a massive part to play in the completion of this game and unlocking the Platinum trophy.

As a result, it's difficult to stick a time estimation on the overall completion window, simply because there are too many variables that make it tough to determine with a definitive figure. There's alot of luck regarding some of the previously mentioned trophies, and it's highly likely you'll end up playing way more ranked matches than you need to in order to officially register 70 wins online.

It's hugely demanding, and even more challenging, making for a list that's tough to crack.
