Platinum #22 - Dead Space

Platinum Difficulty Rating - 8/10
Even though there are alot of progression based, cumulative and collectible related trophies in this list, it is still a surprisingly tough Platinum trophy.

As previously stated, you can unlock a bunch of progression based trophies through beating each chapter in the game, along with every boss fight and for completing the game on varying difficulty levels.

This equates to almost half of the entire list, and if you include the cumulative trophies, which also take a healthy slice of the list through obtaining 30 kills with each of the games weapons, amassing a certain amount of money and dismembering a varyingly increased number of limbs, then you've got a very generous selection of trophies that will reward you for simply playing through the game.

As far as what makes this game a tough Platinum, all 3 of the gold trophies on offer see to the challenge appropriately. The "Epic Tier 3 Engineer" trophy, awarded for completing the game on the hardest difficulty setting (Impossible mode) definitely lives up to it's billing, and will provide a solid test throughout the duration of the game, with a few notable spikes in toughness during certain areas and boss fights.

When you take into account the sparse supply of health and ammunition and the increased toughness of enemies, it definitely puts your skills to the test, and it's is highly advised that you tackle the game on a lower difficulty first, in order to be able to upgrade your RIG and armoury sufficiently enough to dive into Impossible mode and being prepared for the challenge it brings. Even though you do need to actually unlock the mode by beating the game once, you wouldn't be strong enough to tackle it anyway, so a more leisurely play-through to unlock some of the other trophies first will work in your favour regardless.

The "Maxed Out" trophy, awarded for upgrading all weapons and equipment, is the toughest trophy in the list, and will probably require the best part of 3-4 runs of the game in order to earn enough credits to buy every power node you need. There are 7 guns to upgrade, and the RIG, Statis and Kinesis paths also need to be fully kitted out too, and given the fact you need a total of 152 nodes to fulfil every one of these requirements, you're going to need to play the game through to the end at least 3 times, especially when you consider each entire run only gives out around 40 nodes (the rest have to be purchased with credits from the store).

It doesn't exactly make things grindy, because the trophy list gives you reasons to go back through the game multiple times regardless. You'll need to unlock Impossible mode by beating the game once, and therefore cannot go for the "Epic Tier Engineer 3" trophy straight away, and the "One Gun" trophy is best focused on during a single run anyway.

Speaking of which, the "One Gun" trophy, the final gold in the list, awarded for beating the game using only the Plasma Cutter, is pretty self explanatory, and in reality, the hardest thing about this trophy is just making sure you don't lose focus and accidently use another weapon during your play. If you tackle this trophy on a final play-through, you'll have most likely maxed it out too, which makes the game a complete breeze.

Some people may wish to go for this trophy in tandem with the "Epic Tier 3 Engineer" trophy, but there isn't much point, since you'll need to play the game once more to unlock the "Maxed Out" trophy anyway, so it just makes more sense to break these trophies apart and focus on them separately.

The "Legend Teller" trophy, awarded for collecting 150 logs, covers the collectible related portion of the Platinum, but is one of the easier set of collectibles you'll encounter. The game contains more than 150 logs, so there is a margin for error, and the game is quite linear too, so you tend to stumble into the majority of them naturally, and never really have to deviate from any key story paths.

The "Slugger" trophy, awarded for killing the Slug boss with more than 50% shield strength remaining, is a tough little trophy, and could realistically take a large handful of attempts. It's nothing that a bit of determination can't see through, but it does carry a high element of skill too.

It is important to note, whilst there are alot of methods out there that can make the game easier, including cheat codes and various bits of DLC (Which, for some strange reason, have no impact on the unlocking of trophies), without them, you'll be in for a solid challenge, and you should absolutely tackle the Platinum without the temptation to cheat and take shortcuts.

Completed legitimately, you're looking at around 3-4 play-throughs of the game, with the additional challenge that the difficulty of the hardest game mode throws at you too. It's a challenging road, but a satisfying one too, and you're probably looking at around 40-50 hours in total to beat the whole list. Avoid the cheats, and you've got a fairly credible Platinum in your collection.
